Lingering (itch) Mac Os Catalina
My 2013 Mac Pro has served me well, but I’m ready for a cooler, faster replacement. I am coveting a mini, but before I pull the trigger, I need to know whether it will natively support my 5120 x 1440 display. The 2013 MP won’t utilise the entire screen, and instead treats it as two 2560 x 1440 monitors, which works, but is sub-optimal. Any upgrade for me will have to improve on that setup.
Second, I absolutely need virtualisation. My job requires at least six VMs, running different versions of Linux and MacOS. The Linux machines have long ago been migrated to qemu, but I’m loath to jump through the hoops to get my Mac VMs running on libvirt when I have a perfectly cromulent VMware Fusion environment for them. I have a physical Windows box, so that’s no problem. I know VMware and Parallels are working on their AS releases, but guest OS support seems to be a huge question mark.
Has anyone seen anything solid about whether vendors will support older versions of MacOS on Apple silicon? If that’s going to be possible once the dust settles, then I can maybe keep those VMs running on the Mac Pro for a short term. If support for x86 virtualisation is impractical/impossible, I’ll start the process of getting Mac-on-qemu working. But I won’t even bother with that if a switch to M1 won’t bring native support for my monitor.
Any thoughts, real-world experience or speculation?
